From January 12th though January 15th, Members of the Massachusetts Fraternal Order of Police State Executive Board attended the Eastern Region Labor Coalition Annual Conference in Fort Lauderdale Florida. President Todd Bramwell, National Trustee Rich Shailor, Treasurer Miller Thomas, and Secretary James Franco all attended the event.

On January 13th, the FOP Eastern Regional Labor Coalition held a training class on Grievances and Critical Incident Response. Secretary Franco attended this class with FOP leaders from all the ERLC member states. The class was taught by FOP Attorney Mike Coviello and covered topics related to handling of grievances and representative response to critical incidents. The class was very well presented and praised by all who were in attendance.

On January 14th, the Eastern States Labor Coalition held its annual conference. The meeting was run by ERLC Chairman Todd Bramwell. Presentations were made to those in attendance by Beacon Financial and Wells Fargo Home Mortgages. Both companies work closely with the FOP to offer member benefits. National President Chuck Canterbury also addressed the body and commented on several major issues happening within the FOP. Not the least of these was his praise of the recent win for Law Enforcement in Ohio, where lawmakers were attempting to pass legislation making that a right to work state. Legislation which ultimately failed in part because of the efforts of FOP leaders within that state. The President of Ohio FOP Jay McDonald would later thank many other FOP members who came to his state to assist in the fight. President Canterbury would later make point of the increase of violent encounters law enforcement officers are having to deal with domestically and worldwide. President Canterbury also made comments on fights the FOP is concentrating on and made specific notice to ongoing disputes in Camden, NJ and Central Falls, RI.

As each of the other member states spoke on what was happening in their states, one common theme rang through; we are all fighting the same fight. Pay, benefits, collective bargaining agreements and retirements are under attack almost everywhere. As the economy has suffered, these hard earned benefits have fallen out of favor. All over the country, officers are finding themselves fighting to keep what they have. This is no different here in Massachusetts.  The FOP continues to be a strong and active voice for the men and women of law enforcement, both locally and nationally.
