    Las Cruces police officer killed in stabbing, suspected attacker shot dead

    A Las Cruces Police Department patrol officer was killed, and the suspected attacker was shot to death by a citizen bystander. Officer Jonah Hernandez, 35, died from a stab wound while responding to a trespassing call on Feb. 11. Hernandez, who is from El Paso and has been with LCPD for two years, leaves behind a wife and two sons, ages 10 and 2.

    Two El Paso law enforcement agencies partnered up to help make a 7-year-old battling a brain tumor's dream come true. On Sunday, El Paso Police and Sheriff's Officers Associations teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and escorted little Natalie, her parents and her brother to the airport where they boarded a plane bound for Disney World.

    The El Paso Municipal Police Officers' Association extends its deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of Las Cruces, New Mexico Police Officer Jonah Hernandez. He was killed Sunday afternoon, February 11, 2024, in the line of duty after responding to a trespassing call. Fallen Officer Hernandez, who is from El Paso, had been with the LCPD for two years.

After more than 30 years with the department — rising from patrol officer to sergeant to lieutenant and eventually assistant chief in 2009 — Pacillas is by all accounts a product of the department and late Chief Greg Allen.

    Peter Pacillas named new El Paso police chief

    Update from case Detective: Regarding the murder trial for retired SLMPD Sergeant Ralph Harper. At 1:00pm this afternoon (9/18/23), the defendant pled guilty to Murder 2nd Degree, Robbery 1st Degree and two counts of Armed Criminal Action. As part of a plea agreement with the State, he was sentenced to 20 years on the Murder 2nd Degree charge, 15 years on the Robbery 1st Degree charge and 6 years on the two Armed Criminal Action charges with the terms to be run concurrently. The Harper family was present in the courtroom and heard the defendant admit his responsibility in the fatal shooting. They are thankful for the support from the SLMPD and are relieved to finally have a conclusion to this tragic incident.

Retired Detective Marquez served with the El Paso Police Department for 25+ years, from January 1972 until his retirement on February 14, 1997.
    Community met with four finalists for El Paso Police Chief

    On Wednesday, Sept. 13, the community was invited to meet and hear from the finalists for the El Paso Police Chief position. The four finalists are Steve Dye, Peter Pacillas, David Ransom and Victor Zarur. Steve Dye was the Police Chief for Grand Prairie, Texas from 2011 to 2020 where he was also the deputy city manager and is currently the city manager.
